Background of the Study
Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in the cells of the body, which is essential for producing hormones, vitamin D, and bile acids. However, when cholesterol levels become elevated, particularly low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, it can lead to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease. High cholesterol is one of the primary risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including coronary artery disease, heart attacks, and strokes. The relationship between high cholesterol and heart disease is well-documented, with evidence suggesting that individuals with high cholesterol levels are at a significantly greater risk for developing heart disease (Adeoye et al., 2023).
In Gombe State, a northeastern Nigerian state, the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases is on the rise, with lifestyle changes, unhealthy eating habits, and increasing rates of physical inactivity contributing to the high cholesterol levels seen in the population. Despite the availability of cholesterol-lowering medications, many individuals remain undiagnosed or do not adhere to prescribed treatments, increasing their risk of heart disease. The role of cholesterol in the development of CVDs in Gombe State has not been extensively researched, thus making it important to investigate how high cholesterol contributes to the burden of heart disease in this region.
Statement of the Problem
The increasing prevalence of high cholesterol levels in Gombe State, compounded by poor health literacy and inadequate access to healthcare, is a major contributor to the rising rates of heart disease. Many individuals with high cholesterol are unaware of their condition or lack the necessary resources to manage it effectively. This study seeks to assess the impact of high cholesterol on heart disease in Gombe State, aiming to identify key risk factors and improve public health interventions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on individuals aged 18 and above in Gombe State, particularly those diagnosed with or at risk for high cholesterol. The study's limitations include potential challenges in reaching individuals in rural areas, reliance on self-reported data regarding diet and lifestyle, and access to comprehensive health data from local healthcare providers.
